Carefree flip flops are not always a smart summer choice

Your favorite pair of comfy flip flops could be the reason for your foot pain.

In a summer of record-breaking heat, many Americans find it easy to throw on a pair of flip flops and head out the door. However, a recent study shows that this popular shoe provides little to no arch support. To prevent a future foot problem, you may want to save your sandals for the beach and short trips, according to the Institute for Preventative Foot Health.

According to the study, 78 percent of adults over the age of 21 reported having had at least one foot issue in their lives, and women tend to suffer from sore and achy feet more than men. Young people are typically more at risk for developing bunions, pain in the feet and stress fractures from flip flops since they are less self-conscious about exposing their feet in public.

In an interview with CNN, Bob Thompson, executive director of the Institute for Preventative Foot Health, warned, “everything in your body starts with how you strike your heel to the ground,” making your footwear choice very important, especially if you happen to be a city dweller.

Although feet are naturally designed to walk flat-footed on grass or sand, steel and concrete are a foot’s worst nightmare. The slim slab of plastic that flip flops provide do not adequately absorb the shock from walking on these surfaces, resulting in pain not only in your feet, but in your back, knees and hips as well.
