The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has launched its Get Up! Get Out! and Get Moving! campaign to encourage people to get off the couch this summer and participate in active lifestyles.
This is in light of the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 12.5 million American children are obese – that’s not to mention the one-third of all adults who fall into the same category.
“It is important to reach out to kids, because the younger people start moving, the more likely they are to continue that lifestyle into adulthood,” said orthopaedic surgeon and AAOS spokesperson John Purvis, M.D.
Research has indicated that one reason many people don’t get enough exercise is because foot pain makes activity uncomfortable, even for children. Individuals who are overweight or obese and have foot problems may want to consider conservative means of correction, as fixing issues like bunions or hammer toe can improve mobility and make it easier to exercise.
