Women with bunions or hammer toe are generally advised to steer clear of high heels with narrow toe boxes, as they pack a double-whammy of foot pain by squishing the forefoot into an unnaturally compact position.
In order to don fancy footwear sans pinched toes, ladies may want to look for shoes with a relatively low, stable heel and an ankle strap to hold the heel in place.
Keeping the heel placed against the back of the shoe is key to giving the toes enough room to move around. Moreover, this will prevent the toes from gripping the front of the shoes when walking, which can alter the gait and potentially lead to falls.
Padding and arch support are also key in choosing a comfortable pair of heels. If a particular pair of shoes fits the bill to provide good heel stability but lacks a soft interior, consider using orthotic inserts in the shoes for added support.
