Marathoners should pad their bunions for the big race

Warm weather means that runners may be gearing up to take on intense challenges. One of the greatest feats for these athletes is the marathon, a 26.2-mile run that requires months of training.
For runners with bunions, the challenges of finishing a marathon extend beyond fatigue and hydration, as the bony foot deformities can become very painful during a long race.
Pre-race, athletes may want to consider wearing bunion splints in the evening and orthotics during the day, as well as icing their bunions after training sessions and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as needed.
Marathon time is when reducing foot pain gets a little trickier. It’s not practical to take a break when discomfort gets intense, so taking some steps to reduce bunion pain before beginning may be the best course of action.
This includes taping and padding bunions. Tape can hold the big toe joint in proper alignment, which may improve landing mechanics, and padding with moleskin or gel cushions can reduce irritation stemming from bunions rubbing against the inside of shoes.
