September is Arthritis Awareness Month, and as a result, The Arthritis Society in Canada is recommending that people with throbbing joints head to the doctor for a screening in order to prevent further joint damage.

According to the organization, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It's characterized by worn cartilage that causes hindered mobility in the joint, inflammation and swelling.

"Learning more about what lies behind your joint pain is a major quality of life issue. Establishing an early diagnosis of osteoarthritis is critical to the outcome of the disease, since it only gets progressively worse and therapies work best when started as early as possible," said Steven McNair, president and CEO of The Arthritis Society.

Bunions can either be the result of or the cause of osteoarthritis in the joint of the big toe. While the condition typically affects the fingers, hips, knees and neck, individuals with bunions should still visit their healthcare provider for an osteoarthritis screening.

Additionally, they may want to consider using bunion splints or orthotics, which have been shown to prevent or reduce the appearance of bunions or hammer toe without the need for bunion surgery.
