The American Podiatric Medical Association has offered several tips to help runners maintain healthy feet despite their high-impact sport of choice. 

"If runners can take just a few minutes to stretch properly pre-workout, select appropriate footwear, and see a podiatrist immediately when foot pain occurs, many of these ailments can be avoided entirely," said Kathleen Stone, APMA president.

The expert said that runners should do some research before investing in a new pair of shoes to be sure that they choose footwear appropriate for their specific needs.

For example, if a runner has bunions, they may want to look for a pair of shoes with a wide toe box and good arch support to help prevent the deformity from advancing.

Stretching and warming up before a run may help relax muscles, thereby preventing strain or fatigue. A post-run ice bath for the feet or legs may also reduce soreness.

Runners with bunions may also want to consider bunion splints or orthotics, which can help to prevent or correct the deformities without the use of bunion surgery.
